Of that number,<strong>&nbsp;50.4 million are in receipt of retirement benefits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the largest federal retirement programme on offer but the entitlement for it can be a little confusing. There is no fixed age when you have to start receiving the monthly payments, but the time when you first claim the support will have a bearing on how much you receive each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each individual has a&nbsp;<strong>\u2018full retirement age\u2019<\/strong>, which can vary based on the year in which they were born. Regardless of your full retirement age you can start receiving Social Security retirement benefits at 62, but&nbsp;<strong>opting to defer the payments will bag you a larger monthly payment when you do decide to claim the support.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you reach 70 years old, the monthly payment stays the same. If year were born later than that,&nbsp;<strong>your retirement age will rise by two months for every year past 1954<\/strong>&nbsp;that you were born in. While you may want to retire, that\u00a0does not preclude you from working. There are earning thresholds which could result in some of you retirement benefits being dropped. If you are under the age of 67, there is a limit on how much you can earn in a year before your benefits are reduced. For 2022,\u00a0<strong>the annual earning limit is $19,560<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you earn over this threshold, the SSA will reduce your benefits payments<\/strong>&nbsp;by $1 for every $2 you earn over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you will reach&nbsp;<strong>full retirement age<\/strong>&nbsp;in 2022, the limit on your earnings before penalties will be $51,960. If you earn over this limit after reaching full retirement age, the SSA will deduct $1 in benefits for every $3 you earn above a different limit.
